Wakanda Forever! Black Panther Roars into History!

3/1/2018

Black Panther's record breaking success roars loud and clear that diversity is both socially and economically viable in the world market place. In other words #OurHeroesMatter! Years prior to the current Black Panther phenomenon, the Fast and Furious franchise obliterated the facade that People of Color were not a viable asset in the overseas market. This time the numbers have spoken louder than ever and one can only hope that the studios will take notice and that these accomplishments will not fall on deaf ears.
Let's pause for a moment and take account of some of the major reasons why Studios need not ignore the enormous success of Black Panther when considering green lighting future Heroic/Action content that reflects multicultural images and interests. Here are just a few of the records that Black Panther has broken to date:
  • Biggest weekend opening in February
  • Biggest February opening day record
  • Biggest Monday Box Office record
  • Marvel's highest Tuesday gross ever
  • Marvel's highest Wednesday gross ever
  • Marvel's highest Thursday gross ever
  • MCU's highest grossing first week ever
  • MCU's highest grossing second week
  • Biggest weekend opening for a non-sequel feature
  • Biggest opening for a solo comic book movie

  • Biggest Friday-Sunday opening on a holiday weekend
  • Biggest opening for an extended holiday weekend
  • Biggest opening for a non-white director
  • Highest-grossing movie in America to be directed by an African American director
  • Biggest pre-summer weekend opening
  • The highest Rated Superhero Film of all time
  • The most presales of any Superhero Film
  • The most presales of a Marvel Movie
  • The record for the highest Thursday night previews
  • Highest Grossing Solo (Non Sequel) Superhero Movie

Black Panther has become a billion dollar box office phenomenon (Variety, Forbes). I am excited to see the residual effects this success has on diversity and new content as it pertains to heroes of color. If nothing else Black Panther's success has proven that the world is ripe for change and won't settle for anything else!

Black Panther; More than a Movie it's a Call 4 Action

2/19/2018

The box office has once again reflected the cry of Diversity, Inclusion and Change which has been the banner of many disenfranchised people of color for decades. Again our dollars have slashed the facade and misconception that Black, Brown and Yellow are not viable entertainment assets in a global economy, yet Forbes reports a 235 million dollar domestic record breaking weekend while Vanity Fair reports a 404 million dollar global intake for the debut of Marvel's Black Panther. Record breaking numbers like these roar #OurHeroesMatter with this historical triumph!

I find it particularly interesting that the same studios responsible for the strategic demise of non White personas in media through character assassination (rampant depictions of Thugs, Rapist, Murderers, Slaves, Servants, Prostitutes, Drug Dealers, Fools and Buffoons) are full of culprits loading the decks with Jokers in order to detour the green lighting of content which reflect multicultural Heroic images. These Jokers are the race cards that individuals within studios use to thwart projects that would depict heroic progressive images of color by insisting that Black, Brown and Yellow will negatively affect the bottom line. This propaganda has been a Joke for decades. Black, Brown and Yellow have always sold world wide and most of the time under extreme circumstances. Take the Blaxploitation era for instance, many would argue that those films saved Hollywood in the 70's. 80's films like Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon, and 90's Super Hero flix Spawn and Blade all shattered stereotypes and have gone on to be pillars of diversity reflecting Heroic images of color. The nations biggest stars are Athletes and Musicians who happen to be People of Color so how is it that our faces negatively affect corporate bottom line especially when statistics show that Latinos, African and Asians Americans buy the majority of move tickets according to the MPAA report? Michael Jai White, Wesley Snipes, Will Smith, Vin Diesel, The Rock, and now Chadwick Boseman have all delivered fatal blows to the misconception that the world market place doesn't support images of color.

The beauty of the Black Panther movie being so successful is that it sparks conversations. These conversations initially are about the various dynamics of the film but subsequently the conversations will also lead to the dynamics surrounding the film as well as inquiries about the cast, their prior works and ultimately what can we do as individuals to continue this momentum of change. I ultimately have two questions at this point. The first being, will Studios continue to make excuses for these success stories or will they change? Two, will People of Color stop making excuses and join resources to make their own Heroic success stories now that it is clear that people are hungry to see their reflections finally portrayed as Heroes and not Hoodlums, Slaves, Butlers, Buffoons and everything else subservient?

Be a part of the Action!

8/10/2017

The Urban Action Showcase is on a mission to change the stereotypical way that People of Color are portrayed in mainstream media by presenting and promoting Heroic images that reflect Multicultural images and interests. The UASE was created out of concern for the lack of positive Heroic role models of color in the Action film genre. We are trying to play a part in the shifting of the common and unflattering portrayal of minorities in entertainment. We do this in several ways from encouraging the craft through our UAS International Action Film Festival platform competitions which boasts the Cinemax Action Short Film Competition, by exposing previous works that represent positively and teaching all necessary skills of the trade through our Action Expo and Awards platforms.

In order to grow and make a significant impact in the industry we need your support! A collective front is the message that we need to be able to send to the Powers that Be. By showing your support trough your Event Pass purchases, Exhibitor Booth registration or Donations will allow us to offer a better experience to both Fans and Professionals.
Check out why we believe we are worth your support!
